What's RIGHT With The "New Age"?
07-21-01
After stirring the pot with the original article about what I see as wrong with the New Age, it's only fair that I show the flip side. I am mutable :-)
There are many blessings in our world right now, even if it's difficult to see them clearly. One of the blessings is that people are coming together in broader and more unique ways to share knowledge, experience and awareness. The WWW surely has gone a long way towards making a global community of souls who are willing to share their selves with others.
The WWW is very much a Uranian "thing" astrologically, creating an electronic means to connect vast numbers of people in the blink of an eye. With Uranus' transit thru aquarius, the web has grown bigger and more and more people are Online. Chat rooms are a natural progression here as well, giving instant meeting space to people who otherwise would not have any means in which to meet with these people. It's decidedly a New Age thing to spend a part of each day chatting with friends you have never met physically..... and loving them as if they were right next door.
It's my belief that anything that promotes learning and growth, is a good thing. And the New Age Movement is about learning and growth; The issues I have in the previous essay are simply that it can become a temporary holding cell, rather than an actual change of the physical reality. However, many people have taken their New Age Experience and used it for their highest good. And for the highest good of all.
What is the difference between high road New Age, and low road New Age?
High road isn't a numbing experience, nor is it a cult-like following; it seeks to express a longing in a way that others also benefit; it's a highly personal experience that is shared. It's RESPONSIBLE for the actions taken, the choices made, and the reality being created.
Low road New Age, on the other hand, is a drug, not unlike alcohol or narcotics, meant to take away the responsibility and dull the senses to the actual physical act of living THIS life.
It has been mentioned in my message forum that rocks/stones can be a means to create a focus; this takes me back a few years.... ok, a lot of years, to my learning Lamaze breathing in order to give birth to my daughters in as natural a state as possible, considering how "interesting" the experience of childbirthing IS.... One of the keys to the Lamaze method of childbirth is to create a focal point, a place to focus attention during the actual contraction. In class, people brought all sorts of things in as their focal point; From a picture they could hang on the wall in the L & D room, to a music box, or another visual tool. It didn't matter what you focused on, I know women who were content focusing on those little dots that seem to be on the ceiling of every hospital room in the world.
Each was different; no two focal points were the same, and no two labors and deliveries were the same either. By the time I had daughter #3, I was very GOOD at creating a focal point; as I reached the home stretch, and she was moments away from being born, I remember a woman in another labor room screaming obscenities to the nurse, to the father of the child, and to anybody else who walked in the room; I broke concentration long enough to ask the nurse to SHUT that woman up, because her screams were annoying to me... but it's funny, we both ended up with babies that night, we just took different routes to GET there ...
And, in the end... isn't that what this living is all about? We are, thru our studies and experiences, giving birth to our Selves over and over again. Yes, labor is painful. That can be likened to the struggles we find in our day to day lives; some people can't handle the pain, and are forced to resort to pain medications.... (getting caught up in relationship issues, being willing to become whatever the other one wants in order to be "loved", working with only money in mind as the goal..... resorting to looking for the HIGH of spirituality or food... or drugs... or alcohol.... name your drug of choice....) Other people change their opinion of what "pain" IS for them, and can get thru the day without seeking a means to numb the experience.
While I chose to give birth to my youngest daughter without screaming... and the woman next to me gave birth to a son, screaming at the top of her lungs.... neither one of us RUINED the experience, we simply allowed our individual experiences to bring into the world a new life.
If stones give you comfort, buy them and enjoy them to the fullest. If reading Deepok Chopra or Conversations with God. or Course of Miracles, brings you closer to giving birth to your Self, it's a good thing. What I have experienced isn't what you will experience; I can only share where I have been, and the visions of where I will be going. Just keep an eye on the individual experience that is happening within YOU, and don't lose sight of your physical reality in the journey. Don't hand your power over to a stone, or think that because you can't remember what color which chakra is, you are in need of a chakra cleansing.
Anytime the New Age empowers a person to explore their own belief system and the beliefs of others, and to create a healthier flow of energy, it's RIGHT.
Anytime the New Age opens up discussion amongst people from various and diverse backgrounds, it's RIGHT.
Anytime the New Age creates a healthier means to work within ones individual experience, it's RIGHT.
Anytime the New Age opens the door to ones heart and mind, it's RIGHT.
Being considered "lesser" or not "advanced" by not embracing the current New Age Ideology of the moment is not right. Speaking in terms of LEVELS, as if there are lesser beings because they do not share the same teachings, is not right. Anything that empowers another over you, be it stone or human, isn't right.
Use all the tools at your disposal in order to experience your spiritual journey. Throw away the ones that don't work for you, or that you have outgrown. Just like you wouldn't want to wear the same clothes everyday for the rest of your life, you have the right to shed the skin of what you KNEW to be TRUE before... but have since grown beyond....
Celebrating this gift of LIFE is the foundation to build anything your heart desires. Learning the differences between needing, wanting and desiring... is part of the process as well.
You ARE Love.
Always,
Galen
